Abigail's House

Abigail was a woman who lived in Israel at the time of David. Her story is found in 1Samuel, Chapter 25. It is only one chapter in length, yet it says much about the struggle of women facing abuse at home. Abigail’s story can help women understand how to protect family and love ones from abuse and still maintain a godly submission.

In this study, we will look at a "portrait" of Abigail’s household by examining the characters of the people in it. Read 1Samuel 25 to familiarize yourself with the story, then answer the following discussion questions:

  1. What are some of Abigail’s characteristics? (See verses 3, 33, 36-37).
  2. How would you rate her understanding of God and current events? (verses 26-33)
  3. What do others think about Abigail’s judgment and ability to make decisions? (verses 14-17, and 33)
  4. Is Abigail passive, or is she a woman of action? (verse 18)
  5. What are some of Nabal’s characteristics? (verses 2, 3, 17, 25, 36)
  6. In what ways did Nabal abuse others? (verses 14, 21, 39)
  7. Was Abigail afraid of Nabal? Do you think she had to "walk on eggshells" around him? (verses 19, 36-37)
  8. In what ways did Nabal’s behavior negatively affect his family? (verses 17, 34, 36)
  9. Was Abigail submissive? Why do you think so? (see also verses 19, 37, 41)

If you have been a victim of domestic violence, you can probably relate to Abigail's situation and her household.  You are encouraged to read the other studies in this series about Abigail to see what she teaches us about dealing with domestic violence.
